Practice on the Water, Fall & Spring

The team practices on the Cuyahoga River, launching from the Cleveland Rowing Foundation Boathouse in Rivergate Park in the Flats. Practices are held Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday. The Shaker Heights school district provides a bus and driver to take the athletes to the boathouse during the week.  Athletes are responsible for their own transportation on Saturdays.

Winter Conditioning

Winter indoor training is the main way that rowers prepare for a competitive spring season.  Strength, technique, and endurance are all developed during this critical season.  Training includes workouts on the rowing machines (“ergs”), weight training, core workouts, yoga, and trips to indoor rowing tanks as well as competition in an indoor ergatta.


Regular attendance is expected at practice and regattas.  A limited number of excused absences are allowed each season, and rowers must notify coaches in advance if they will miss any scheduled practices or events.

To limit missed practices, try to schedule appointments between 3:00 and 4:00, during the weeks between the fall season and winter conditioning, or on weekends when possible.

What To Wear And Have For Practice

-Compression shorts or pants (to keep from getting caught in the seat of the rowing machine or boat) 

-Athletic shorts or pants (to wear over compression pants for running and/or weightlifting)

-Comfortable shirt that is not too long

-Running shoes 

-Slides or sandals

-Enough layers to stay warm

-Hats (baseball/visor for spring, beanie for winter)

-Non-disposable water bottle
